So I guess I raided Blockbuster and after finding about six DVDs that were scratched up (including Annie Hall, Amadeus, Match Point, The Big Lebowski, etc), I ended up buying these six movies, plus another one with no case which was The Diving Bell and the Butterfly.
17 Again [because I’m a homosexual who loves Zefron in this]

Heavenly Creatures
The Hours
Perfume: The Story of a Murderer

JUAN’S TOP TWENTY OF 2010

The Social Network, Black Swan, Somewhere, Never Let Me Go, 127 Hours, Blue Valentine, The King’s Speech, True Grit, Inception, I Am Love, The Kids Are All Right, Shutter Island, Rabbit Hole, Enter the Void, The Town, Toy Story 3, The Fighter, Easy A, The Ghost Writer, Scott Pilgrim vs The World

It’s finally come to that point in time where I have to make an official decision of my favorite movies of last year. I couldn’t really put it off much longer seeing as it’s already been a little over two weeks since the end of the year, so these are my decisions. Even though I’ve unfortunately had to make a decision that doesn’t include every movie from last year (as I’ve missed a few due to release dates), I think I’ve made a pretty fair decision and I like to think that I’ve made some great choices and given a pretty wide range of movies and genres. I also have one award to present and that would be an honorable mention for the Best Comedy of the Year, Hot Tub Time Machine. Just kidding everybody.

Warner Bros has hired Shane Black to direct a live action adaptation of the Japanese manga series Death Note. Black will oversee a script that’s being written by Anthony Bagarozzi and Charles Mondry. A trio of live action films were distributed by Warner Bros Japan. Warner Bros acquired the manga rights from Shueisha and previously got a script draft from Charley and Vlas Parlapanides.

Alright, so I have some issues with this, and yet maybe I’m really looking forward to it. First of all, this could be one of the best movies based on a manga that I’ve seen in a long time. Do you know why? The director. Shane Black has only directed one movie but it was Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. Have you seen that movie? It’s fucking fantastic. It’s a great crime and dark comedy. And honestly, Death Note is basically one big dark comedy in my eyes. The story might essentially be a crime series, but a lot of the dialogue, especially between Light and L is so perfect for a dark comedy with a lot of crime and thriller influence. Obviously, you have to include the supernatural influence into things (Ryuk, as well as the Deathnote itself), but I think this could actually work out really fucking well depending on how they make the script work. Plus, it’s Warner Brothers and I do have some faith in them, and this is one of my favorite manga series and even though it’s become really overrated in the anime community over the last few years, it’s still one of my favorites just because of the subject and the actual discussion you could have when you really get down to things and think about the story.
