there are actually a lot of reasons i get inexplicably frustrated with people when they refer to certain characters as “quirky for the sake of being quirky” or something along those lines because there are very few people out there who can actually capture certain personalities and place them into a movie properly and moonrise kingdom is not flawed in that aspect
when it comes to wes anderson, all those little things come together to create a world that is part fantasy and part realistic, especially in moonrise kingdom. the entire thing plays out like a fairy tale featuring kids who are desperate to grow up. it’s almost like the exact opposite of peter pan and the lost boys (and yet i’d say there are more than enough parallels to it like when suzy is reading to all the boys and telling them a story it just screamed wendy and peter and the lost boys to me) at times and that children’s book fantasy is always there because at the end of the day this is a movie about KIDS and surprise not all kids are the same and some of them are in fact a little “quirky.” no matter how wacky it might seem, it’s a movie that really focuses on what it’s like to be a kid, always wanting to be older because that world seems so appealing, even though (as wes shows in the movie) the adult world is one full of sadness and misery. the whole movie just showcases the contrast between adults and kids and it’s beautifully done (not just in writing, but acting, style, and even music because heavily featuring benjamin britten’s music FOR KIDS was genius) and there are plenty of points where i felt a very strong emotional connection to moonrise kingdom so here’s this long post about it
