February 2012
Is anyone actually offended by Billy Crystal putting on make-up for a role he’s played dozens of times on SNL that even Sammy Davis Jr himself stated he enjoyed before he passed away?
There are people out there who genuinely think Harry Potter was “snubbed” - including Daniel Radcliffe - and that makes me really worry about everyone’s sanity.
I’m still not over just how honest and wonderful Meryl’s speech was and how genuine her big thank you’s to her husband and to Roy Helland were because that’s how you show real appreciation for the people in your life.
So it looks like I’ve:
- Outguessed Ebert
- Won a bottle of wine from my friends betting pool (10+ people)
- Tied with two others for second place in my private movie torrenting site betting pool (76 people)
- Still waiting to find out if I won Yiannis’ betting pool
- Cried a lot because of Meryl Streep
Tonight is a good night.

What was best picture anyway?

ok I love how this year’s theme is “I love the movies” and so on and yay we all love movies but maybe not nominating shitty movies would be a good way to celebrate our love of movies
maybe
Frankly, you should all be happy that the winner for Best Picture wasn’t:
- A movie that reinforces negative stereotypes about African Americans
- A movie that exploits 9/11 while ruining an excellent novel
While I’m still slightly uncomfortable with a film like The Artist winning Best Picture this year (although I’d have enjoyed seeing The Tree of Life or even Hugo up there), I don’t think it’s a bad movie by any standards. I mean, just think about how hard it is to find actors who can genuinely find the means to draw you in and express the same sentiments through only facial expressions rather than through dialogue. Think about how tough it is to compose a score that can draw as much emotion as that one did (especially a piece like Comme une rosée de larmes which makes me tear up every time). Even writing a screenplay for a silent film is no easy feat.
Yes, some people think it’s silly or dumb to go “back to the past” even though we have new technology that makes everything better through the use of sound, color, and effects. Frankly, I think that’s a really fucking stupid position to take and borderline Michael Bay circa tonight when he said something about making his films as realistic as possible when we all know that he’s the furthest thing from sane realistic that exists.
So what if someone made a silent film that people appreciate? So what if it won a bunch of awards including Best Picture? That’s when you know you’ve found something special. When you can just shut the fuck up for a hundred minutes and comfortably enjoy the silence.
I may or may not have cried for five full minutes when Meryl won her award. I was the only person at the party crying.
i’m thinking of all the betting pools i entered and about how i chose meryl for best actress because my heart told me to and if michelle wins i’m going to probably end up a) crying because i’m so happy and b) crying because i lost the category
and if viola davis wins i’m going to weep and say, “i had so much doubt about you.”
These pants I just tried on make my ass look SO FANTASTIC but you can pretty much see the outline of my cock and that’s uncomfortable.
Oh man so Diana Ross opened with I’m Coming Out and that was fun. I’m sure the 19572648326 other gay men here had the same feeling of excitement in them. She’s also already had one costume change and it’s been half an hour.
I have officially conquered my fear of floorless roller coasters!!!
The gay agenda:
- wake up
- pray that Rick Santorum becomes gay
- push straight people who are riding bikes off of their bikes
- have gay lunch
- go for a gay walk in the gay park
- go to gay work and make gay money
- go gay shopping
- buy gay things
- have gay dinner
- pray that America will be destroyed
- watch a gay television programme on a gay television set
- go to sleep
- have gay dreams

aw! I was just talking about Arianne today! I feel like W.E. was tragically under distributed.
It’s because it has the name Madonna attached to it. Sadly, the world just doesn’t respect her and just because TWC took a risk with it doesn’t mean H Douchestein decided to help promote it much. I mean, I can’t say anything because I haven’t seen it, but from the trailers, stills, original song, and original score alone - you can clearly tell this movie has so much potential and its been painfully overlooked. Plus, Abbie Cornish’s perfect face is in it so it can’t be bad.
Academy Awards A Single Man won:
Academy Awards A Single Man was nominated for:
- Best Actor - Colin Firth
Academy Awards A Single Man should have been nominated for:
- Best Supporting Actor - Matthew Goode
- Best Original Score - Abel Korzeniowski
- Best Director - Tom Ford
- Best Adapted Screenplay - Tom Ford & David Scearce
- Best Cinematography - Eduard Grau
- Best Costume Design - Arianne Phillips (nominated this year for W.E.)
- Best Art Direction - Ian Phillips
Oh man, that’s tough. I’ve got a lot of those honestly. Most of them are really simple scenes. I think one of my all time favorite scenes (and favorite movies) would have to be this little scene in A Single Man where George (Firth) and Jim (Goode) are sitting on a couch together - one reading Breakfast at Tiffany’s and Metamorphosis. It’s just a small conversation, but there hasn’t been a single time in my life that I’ve watched that scene without crying or at the very least tearing up. It also happens in that same film when George receives a certain emotionally devastating phone call. I just can’t express how underrated that movie is and how deserving Colin Firth was for his performance as George Falconer.
I like you anon. You know what’s up. My dream would be to have a segment on TCM with Marya where we could talk about a new release, compare it to a classic, and then show that classic right after discussing them for a few minutes. It’d be a dream come true.
today is definitely a night for listening to the talking heads and reading comics yep
